[I] My birthday cake [message #287765] Mi, 14 Juni 2006 22:43
Torak
Made myself a nice little princesstårta for my birthday, and decided to
amuse myself a bit with the candles.

<http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c192/awmperry/Img1179.jpg>

Shouldn't take folks here too long to figure out how old I am now. ;-)

Must be at least a couple of geek points in it for me.

Yup, spot on. Mamma read it the wrong way round - but the angle of the
photo was carefully selected. :-)

25 or 225?

PS If the latter did the Fire Brigade request the reduction in candles? :)

Speak for yourself, I spent way to long in one of my old sections,
messing around with 128 bit message blocks at bit level. ;-) It got so
bad at one point that I could read most blocks of binary as if it were
plain text.

Let us note that very few university exams cover the applications of
binary to birthday cakes.

I, for one, am far from ignorant about binary. When I was in primary
school, I - on more than one occasion, for fun - wrote out the binary
numbers from zero to one hundred using noughts and crosses as the
symbols. And ever since primary school, I have known the binary for
one hundred (xxooxoo) by heart. I still eat people who mentally file
binary under "things to do with computers" instead of (as
right-thinking people do) filing it under "things to do with
mathematics".

But it didn't occur to me that the candles on your cake were binary,
until I read one of the follow-ups. I mean, why would it?

Adrian.

I caught it because of the asking for geek credit.
Of course it meant I knew it was binary, but still don't know binary
so didn't know what it said.

True, but the world is full of things that are not exactly difficult
but that not everyone knows. Often because they've spent their

I was fishing to find out whether or not Peachy would like some

Ahhh, it's best you clarified then, I totally missed the bait.
Thank you for the offer Adrian, but oh good lord no!

I'm working on learning Spanish, perhaps binary could be on my agenda
next. Everyone who speaks binary is bilingual, they can still talk to
me and get the help they need without me becoming fluent in their languge.

OK, but really, it's _very_ easy. You could learn it in a few minutes.
You can't learn Spanish in a few minutes. I reckon if I explained it,
you'd think, "Is that all? That's simple!"

(Hex is simple, too.)

Something is only easy when you know how :) A point I constantly put over
to customers who said to me 'you must think I'm stupid'[1]. My usual
voiced answer was 'I'm paid to know about computers, you're not. I'm
certain you know more about your job or interests than I do.'

If they were nice and reasonable I usually threw in the comment "There are
no stupid questions, only stupid answers, as a question is just a search
for knowledge'. Then they asked their question[2]

Incidentally my personal definition of 'ignorance' is 'a lack of interest
in obtaining knowledge'. Not just lack of the knowledge itself. I don't
deem anyone ignorant for not knowing something I have no right to expect
them to know.

Kind regards,

Julian

[1] Depending how reasonable they were being the answer 'yes but you're
trying to learn' or 'yes *and* you're obnoxious' flashed in my head.
[2] And sometimes I thought 'No, you were right.. there IS such a thing...'

Ignorance is easily curable, and forgivable. Wilful ignorance isn't.

Because afpers are predictable in certain ways. We know Torak's probably not
5, so there was significance in the candles, and from there afpers are
afpers.
